Westtown Aquatic Piranhas

The Westtown Aquatic Piranhas (WAP) is a school-owned, coach-directed, parent volunteer supported USA Swimming program. The team is celebrating its 11th year during the 2007-2008 short course season.

With a high emphasis on conditioning and stroke technique, the swimmers benefit from a staff of experienced coaches, most with NCAA swimming backgrounds, as well as a certified, dedicated dry-land/strength & conditioning coach. The program boasts one of the best swimmer/coach ratios in the area, last year averaging approximately 10:1.

WAP enjoys use of the schools’ expansive facilities, such as the 6 lane, 25 meter pool with a ten station Total Gym circuit right on deck, and the new Colorado Timing "System 6". In 2007, phase one of the $12.5 million Athletic Facilities Initiative was completed. Improvements to the pool area include six large windows overlooking the beautiful Westtown campus and a substantially enlarged lobby area. In addition, the new Athletic Center has 4 courts, an indoor track, a state-of-the-art fitness room with two flat screen monitors, a separate varsity level, free-weight room and brand new classrooms. The 600 acre campus also includes numerous athletic fields, an outdoor track, a beautiful, lakeside, 3.2 mile cross-country trail and a wooded ropes course for cardio-vascular training. New this year, an expansive parking lot was added directly behind the pool, off of Lake Road. Social events include a Westtown Lake family canoe party in the fall, mid-season pizza parties and dive-in movies, a holiday party and a year-end celebration and awards banquet.

Because the USA Swimming program and pool are both school owned, the team enjoys convenient practice times, with all weekday practices ending before 9 PM and weekend practices during the prime mid-morning hours. Younger swimmers are usually finished by 6:30 PM on school nights. All levels have the opportunity to compete in several coach supervised, USA Swimming sanctioned meets and open water events throughout the year.

The coaching staff includes Head Coach and Aquatics Director, John Eife, Assistant Coaches Danny Reichert, George Schaab, Jessica Sabedra, Toni Hamilton, Eileen Hazard, Kim Norsoph, Kat Shinoda, Marc Kramer and Kristen Winslow.
