Educational Philosophy

Founded in 1799, Westtown School’s philosophical roots reach back to 1647, when George Fox founded the Society of Friends, more commonly known today as Quakers.

Like all Friends, we believe in “that of God” in every person and in the continual re-examining of past patterns based upon new understandings. This respect for every person and openness to new insights contributes to the vitality of the intellectual dialogue on a Friends school campus. At Westtown, it informs our commitment to help each student evolve the combination of qualities crucial to a world-changing life in ever-changing times: a keen mind, an intelligent heart, the conscience to act.

This is what we call “a life-size education”—an education that erases the artificial divide between exemplary academic preparation for college and career and thoughtful preparation for a good and happy life.
