Lower School students learn musical concepts as they have fun: through movement, body percussion and speech patterns. We sing together in classrooms and at the whole Lower School's weekly gathering. Dance and movement are part of the music program in all Lower School grades. We have a full complement of percussion and Orff instruments for the students to play, wonderful tools for encouraging improvisation and composition.
Third graders learn to play recorder, an introduction to the Lower School's instrumental program which starts in fourth grade and continues into fifth. Students can choose to play in the band or the strings program. There are many opportunities to listen, watch, create and perform, including in formal holiday and spring concerts. As they make joyful music, our children see its power to move the Spirit and bring groups of people together.
