To realize the environmental mission and witness of Westtown School, a series of overarching ideals are recommended:
- Sustaining Westtown’s land and buildings is the Board of Trustee’s gift to current and future generations of students, faculty and staff. A firm commitment to preserve and enhance that resource should guide all decisions.
- Support sustainability initiatives on campus with a dedicated staff position, ongoing board involvement at the committee level, and an annual budget.
- Actively consider opportunities in the context of the School’s sustainability mission statement in planning new capital projects, operational strategies, and curriculum decisions.
- Reduce energy and resource consumption in operations and purchasing, and limit life cycle environmental impact wherever possible.
- Take into consideration the rate of return of sustainability investments. If that return equals or exceeds that of the endowment, consider using endowment to fund or partially fund the opportunity.
- Look for innovative ways to involve students and other constituents in the school's sustainability mission – e.g., curriculum, investment opportunities.
- Establish a goal to achieve carbon neutrality.
