Technical Theater

Westtown is fortunate to have wonderful theater spaces. The Barton-Test Theater is a traditional proscenium theater with fly capabilities. The scene shop is equipped with a wide array of power and hand tools. The lighting and sound systems are state of the art. The Greenwood is a natural outdoor amphitheater, and the Green room provides a more intimate space for small productions.

Westtown offers a wide range of opportunities for students to get involved behind the scenes:

  • The Theater Design course teaches students the fundamentals of scenic design, including sets, lighting, and sound. Projects range from creating designs for plays read in class to designing and building the senior play in the spring.
  • Scenic Arts Design (SAD) is a non-competitive checkout. SAD students help design and build sets for all the upper school plays. SAD students get hands-on experience in building and learn how to use all the major tools in scenic carpentry. They also learn basic scenic painting techniques.
  • Students on the Audio/Visual Crew help with the lighting and sound design not only for theater productions, but also for special events in the theater and elsewhere on campus, including concerts, dance performances, and lectures.
