Student Banking

A

Checking accounts should be opened at home before arriving at school. A local bank will also be available on campus on opening day if you prefer to establish a local account. You will need to determine with your child the amount of allowance or set up a budget system that works for you. There is a safe in the Finance Office where students should store amounts of cash more than $20, passports, plane tickets, etc.

Purchasing Textbooks

A

Students must purchase text books, workbooks and paperbacks before coming to school in September. See our website after August 1 for ordering information.

A

Many courses offered by the Math and Science Departments require students to own a graphing calculator from the start of the school year. These courses are:

While there are at least three manufacturers of graphing calculators, the Texas Instrument Model, TI-83 plus or TI-83 silver, is preferred by Westtown. Please be sure to bring a graphing calculator with you to school. Also note that students will not be allowed to use TI-89 calculators. If your daughter or son already has an older model TI-83, that will do.

Cars

A

Day and boarding students may not keep a car on campus.

Clothes

A

The student dress code is in the student handbook. Designated special events require coat and tie for males and dress slacks or dresses for females. All students need athletic clothing appropriate to the sport of choice. Most coaches assist students who need to purchase items after they arrive at school.

Computers

A

IBM compatible computers with printers are available in the Computer Room (50 computers), the Library (20 computers), The Learning Resource Center (8 computers) and in the dormitory lounges (2 to 6 computers). Students have school network access in their dorm rooms.

Handbook for Students and Parents

A

The Handbook will be mailed mid-summer.
The handbook contains important information about life at Westtown and should be read by students and parents alike to answer additional questions.

Health Center

A

There is a Health Center on campus staffed by registered nurses and campus counselors. A nurse is on duty during the Health Center hours, and remains on call 24 hours a day. There are also two physicians who visit twice a week and are on call 24 hours a day.

Health Records

A

Each student must have a full physical annually. Health forms are available on the Website and must be completed before students can participate in athletics or any school activity.

Student Incidental Account

A

This is an account handled through the Finance Office for charges in the School Store and for special lab course fees, college testing fees, taxis to medical appointments, or field trips.

Laundry Facilities

A

Washers & dryers are located in Stone House, Balderston House and on each floor of the main building dorms.

Music Lessons

A

Lessons can be arranged through our Music Department at the time of registration. Parents arrange payment directly with instructors.

Rooms

A

Information concerning roommates and rooms for new students is available at Registration in September.
Standard dorm rooms in the Main Building are approximately 15' by 7'(4.6m x 2.1m).
Stone House Dorm Rooms are 12’ by 14’ (3.65m x 4.27 m).
Balderston House rooms are 11’ x 15’ (3.35m x 4.6m).

What to Bring for Dorm Room

A

Alarm clock, hangers, bed linens and blankets, desk lamp, posters, towels, toiletries, one place setting of dishes and flatware (plate, cup, bowl, knife, fork, spoon), flashlight. A backpack and sleeping bag are handy for overnights. Stereos, fans, computers, hairdryers, and 2.5 cubic foot or less refrigerators (one per room) are allowed. Appliances not permitted include air conditioners, microwave or toaster ovens, space heating appliances, halogen lamps.

Students receive their school day schedule during the opening day registration process.

The school does not provide phone service for students. Students are allowed to use cell phones within specific guidelines
