Prekindergarten

Welcome to Prekindergarten. The children in Prekindergarten are proud to be the youngest students at Westtown School, just beginning their educational journey. New adventures are experienced each day through literature, music, art, science, play, and exploration. In the fall children may watch the extraordinary life cycle of a monarch butterfly. Imagine the excitement of finding a tiny egg on a milkweed leaf that produces a very hungry caterpillar. Watch as that caterpillar grows and grows until it forms a chrysalis. Two weeks later a beautiful butterfly emerges as the metamorphosis is completed. Later in the fall the children explore the differences between insects and spiders through observation. Westtown's campus provides many opportunities for exploration and discovery. A frog pond, woods, grassy fields, farmland, and gardens are all within walking distance of Lower School.

Sharing literature with the prekindergarten class opens the door for all sorts of enriching activities. Whether reading picture books, reciting poetry, dramatizing a favorite story, or creating our own classroom books in the style of favorite authors, four- and five-year-old children have a limitless supply of enthusiasm and creativity. Pre-reading and pre-math skills are reinforced through cooperative games, manipulative materials, songs, stories, and puzzles. While readiness skills are important, learning what it means to be a contributing member of a class, working together, solving problems cooperatively, and feeling good about coming to school is the real work of each Prekindergarten student.
