If you build it...
The 2015-2016 school year marks the 13th anniversary of Westtown Robotics in Upper School! A small program that was inaugurated by a science teacher and three interested students has grown into an organization that serves over 35 students each year. The Robotics team is coached by three Westtown science teachers and mentored by professionals in the tech, engineering, digital media and business fields who volunteer hundreds of hours each year to support student learning.
Westtown Robotics builds competencies rarely demanded of high school students, with a focus on collaborative inquiry, design thinking, understanding organizational dynamics, and the creation of real products that perform.
The team now not only builds robots for competition in the FIRST Robotics program, but also works in
- strategic business planning
- media and public relations
- website development
- collaborative design
- programming in several computer languages
- fundraising and philanthropy
- community outreach.
This year’s team will visit the Westtown Lower School for a “robot day” and will be conducting workshops with students at Vanguard School in Paoli. The “Metal Moose” team are always looking for new places to visit, and are excited to teach people about the work they are doing. We would love to hear from Westtown parents, alumni, and the wider community about opportunities to reach out.
Westtown Robotics is among the most diverse in the country, often representing as many as 10 nationalities, and has been a highly successful enterprise. The Metal Moose has been awarded 13 judged trophies over its 10 year existence for design elegance, programming innovation, control systems technological development and integration of robot design and function. The team has competed locally and regionally in the FIRST Robotics program, and has qualified for and competed in the World Championships (representing the top 10% of teams worldwide) four times, including twice in the past three years.
Building on the success of the Metal Moose in FIRST robotics and work in design thinking, the Lower and Middle School have both established robotics clubs. 4th & 5th graders will participate in the FIRST LEGO League annual challenge.
