Your Investment

Some people say we should treat schools like businesses, measuring the impact of every dollar spent, assessing the value of every hour invested. At Westtown, we don't see school that way. We see school as an investment in children and as an enterprise whose output is wholly intangible. We don't produce things. We transform people.

And yet, we are also a non-profit organization that has to operate as such. It's no secret that the cost to provide a quality education has grown tremendously. We need to ensure that we provide families a solid return on their investment of time, love and money. Top schools, such as Westtown, must invest continually to improve their program, faculty, technology, and facilities to meet the evolving elements of educational excellence. Moreover, a strong commitment to having a diverse student body, such as Westtown has, is expensive.

The truth is that the future of Westtown depends on a blend of efficient business practices, strong enrollment, imaginative auxiliary revenue streams and philanthropy. Giving is absolutely essential to maintaining the best faculty, the best programs, and keeping the mission alive and the values strong. We invite and appreciate your participation.

Financial Overview

Westtown, like most other independent schools and colleges, gains 80 percent of its revenue through tuition. Therefore, 20 percent of our costs are covered through fundraising dollars and alternative sources of revenue. Donors are critical to helping balance Westtown's budget and providing the exceptional academic, spiritual, and extracurricular programs that make up the Westtown experience.

More than 50 percent of our annual budget is allocated for staff and faculty salaries and benefits, with the next largest budget item being financial aid grants (nearly $7.5 million for 2014-15). 45 percent of all students receive financial aid assistance, but only 17 percent of financial aid grants are covered by income from endowed funds restricted for this purpose. Westtown's budget must increase to cover new and innovative educational programs and experiences. Donors are critical to helping balance Westtown's budget and providing the exceptional academic, spiritual, and extracurricular programs that make up the Westtown experience.

How does Westtown cover the remaining 20 percent of its costs? Currently, Westtown's endowment is about $83.1 million. Westtown's Finance Committee prudently targets a long-term spending rate of approximately 4.5 percent of the endowment's market value for the prior 12 quarters, which generates enough to cover 10 percent of the operating budget. The remaining 10 percent relies on the Westtown Fund, fundraising events, and auxiliary programs such as campus rentals, book store sales, and Belfry concessions to complete the needed budget revenue.
