Community Book Club
Who: Parents of Young Children
What: Community Book Club and Discussion
When: Friday, January 20, 2017 from 10 to 11 am
Where: Westtown Lower School

All parents are invited to join us for a conversation led by Kristin Trueblood about the book "The Importance of Being Little" by Erika Christakis. It promises to be an engaging conversation on a powerful book.
Please register for this discussion and let us know if you would like to receive a copy of the book.

“What kids need from grown-ups (but aren’t getting)…an impassioned plea for educators and parents to put down the worksheets and flash cards, ditch the tired craft projects (yes, you, Thanksgiving Handprint Turkey) and exotic vocabulary lessons, and double-down on one, simple word: play.” —NPR.org

“Christakis . . . expertly weaves academic research, personal experience and anecdotal evidence into her book . . .“The Importance of Being Little” makes a bracing and convincing case that early education has reached a point of crisis . . . her book is a rare thing: a serious work of research that also happens to be well-written and personal . . . engaging and important.”—The Washington Post

Come on out and see some of the best Robotic Teams in the country compete for the title. Combining the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. We call FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition the ultimate Sport for the Mind. High-school student participants call it "the hardest fun you'll ever have." Under strict rules, limited resources, and an intense six-week time limit, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It's as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. This high energy event is open to the public.
