Overview
The varsity program at Westtown plays a competitive schedule against a combination of top high schools and a number of independent schools each year. Some of our players go on to play college basketball at the Division 1, 2, and 3 levels. Our program's goals are first and foremost to prepare our student-athletes through skill development, strength and flexibility program, and a rigorous schedule.
Each season, the team travels to play pre-conference tournaments in December, exposure events throughout the season, and in the highly competitive Friends, Schools League and Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools end of season tournament (PAISAA).
In the past 10 years, Westtown has compiled a 203-75 record. The team won its first Friends Schools League title in 26 years in 2012, and more FSL titles in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. In those years, the team also reached the PAISAA finals, winning the state title in 2016, 2017 and 2020
Our alumni often go on to play ball in college and university.

Coach Info

Seth Berger
Head Coach
Seth Berger is in his 11th season as Head Coach at Westtown. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at Westtown for two years. In his first eight years, Westtown had a 203-75 record, winning Friends Schools League championships in 2012, and consecutively from 2014 to 2017. The school’s only prior championship was won in 1986. Under Coach Berger, the team was also runner-up in the PAISAA championships these years and won the state title in 2016 and 2017. In addition, Westtown has won numerous holiday tournaments during Coach Berger’s tenure, including three championships at the Trenton Catholic holiday event, and two championships at the prestigious Bullis School tournament.
Coach Berger, while often soft-spoken in practice, believes strongly that success is in the details, and he works to help his players maximize their abilities, whether they are moving on to play D1, D2, D3, or intramural ball in college. He has coached two NBA players, one McDonald’s All-American, and one NCAA Champion. His love of the game is reflected in his commitment to his players, and to the fact that he still thinks he could be a backup point guard in the NBA. Seth lives in Malvern with his wife Christelle and their sons Cole ’17, TJ ’20, and Quin ’22.
Chris McMonagle
Assistant Coach
Chris McMonagle is entering his 8th season as an assistant at Westtown and works primarily on defensive strategy. Chris played for four years at Eastern University, and prior to joining Westtown’s basketball staff had coaching stints at Franklin & Marshall College and Eastern University. Outside of Westtown, Chris works in software sales in Wayne, PA. He lives in Phoenixville along with his wife Susannah and daughter Molly.
Paul Manning
Assistant Coach
Coach Paul Manning brings over 20 years of international coaching experience to Westtown School. Coach Manning was head coach of Father Matthews Basketball Club, in Cork, Ireland, before relocating to the U.S. When he took over as head coach of Father Matthews, the club had 18 members and on the day he left for the U.S., it was the biggest club in Ireland with over 330 playing members. Along with his club commitments, Coach Manning was the head coach at two high schools while also having a business that provided professional coaching at elementary and middle schools back in his homeland.
Since moving to the U.S., Manning has coached AAU basketball at Competitive Edge/East Coast Power for the past four years and has registered a very strong winning record. His teams have won 13 tournaments and in 2015 had a 3rd place finish at AAU National Championships. Last year Manning served as assistant varsity coach at Devon Prep. Outside of coaching, Paul is the Global Lead for Technology Innovation at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. He lives in Royersford PA, with his wife Natasha and two sons, Lucas and Cian.
Nan Yiljep
Assistant Coach
Nanribet Yiljep (Nan) is entering his sixth season as a volunteer assistant coach for Westtown Basketball. Coach Nan came to the U.S from Nigeria in 2008 and is a 2011 graduate of Westtown School. He went on to play four years of college basketball at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY. As a member of the Skidmore Men’s Basketball team, he won two Liberty League Championships, and he appeared in two NCAA DIII tournaments as a freshman and as a senior captain. Outside of coaching, Nan has a Master of Public Administration (MPA) with a Certificate in Sports Management at West Chester University, in West Chester, PA. Coach Nan is one of four Yiljep brothers to graduate from Westtown School. Coach Nan is currently pursuing an MBA in Marketing Management at Goldey-Beacom College in Delaware.
Cory Jacobson
Assistant Coach
Cory Jacobson is entering his first year an assistant coach at Westtown. After graduating from Temple University, Cory served as an assistant coach at Valley Forge Military College as well as Haverford College. Outside of Westtown, Jacobson manages the Philadelphia 76ers basketball camps and youth programs.
Caleb Kupa
Assistant Coach
Caleb Kupa enters his third year as an Assistant Coach at Westtown. At Westtown, Caleb helps develop offensive and defensive schemes. He manages the scouting of opponents and preparing game plans. Caleb also manages the tracking of statistical data and analytics during games. Finally, he helps with the upkeep of the team’s social media accounts. When the Westtown season concludes, Caleb is an Assistant Coach for Team Final of the Nike EYBL.
Off the court, Caleb graduated from West Chester University in 2019 with a degree in early Grades Education and currently teaches first grade. He played basketball at Lenape High School in Medford, New Jersey for the legendary Bill Lange and Chuck Guittar.
