Overview
Welcome to Westtown Cross Country!
Cross country is a unique sport. It is a team sport where we have individual goals as well as collective goals. This provides the opportunity for measuring success at many levels, whether it be winning a race, completing a course with a personal best time, or running with teammates to push and support one another toward a better team performance.
The cross country program at Westtown has a long tradition of character and success. Our team has fostered an atmosphere where we are respectful of everyone's talents and abilities, where we are supportive of each other, and where we have a great deal of fun while training hard and competing intensely. We believe every team member is important and all the runners can inspire one another with their achievements.
Early season training is focused on gaining a solid base of endurance through distance runs both on campus and in local neighborhoods. Hill work and speed work are added to gain strength and speed. Westtown has one of the most beautiful and most challenging cross country courses of any school in the area. The woods and farm fields of our 600 acre campus provide a wonderful setting to enjoy training and competing.
Just as a musician performs a composition or a painter shows his or her work in a gallery, Westtown runners compete as a joyous expression of who they are and to display the fruit of their hard work. We welcome athletes at any ability and experience who bring a positive attitude and a willingness to challenge themselves and to enjoy and support their teammates.

Coach Info
Elson Blunt
Coach Elson Oshman Blunt has coached cross country and track at independent high schools for decades. He was the assistant and then the head track coach at Wayland Academy (WI) from 1996-1997, then the head girls’ cross country coach at Park School (MD) from 1998-1999, leading the squad to their first league championship after an undefeated season in 1999. At Westtown School, Elson was an assistant track coach from 2005-2006 and assistant cross country coach from 2004-2007 and 2012-2014 becoming the head girls' coach in 2015 and the head coach for the cross country program in 2018. That year, the boys’ team achieved second place in the PAISAA state championships, followed by a first-place finish in 2019.
In addition to coaching, Elson teaches math and economics and participates in residential life at Westtown as a dorm affiliate. He graduated from Haverford College where he ran on the cross country and track teams. Elson still runs regularly, both with the teams and during the off-season, sometimes competitively and always for the joy of it. You might also find him with Westtown students playing Spike Ball, Ultimate, or the unique Quaker sport of Frazleerham which was developed at Sandy Spring Friends School (MD). Elson lives on Westtown's campus with his wife Cheryle and daughter Karah.
