Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

Welcome to our ongoing conversation through Just the Facts.  My best intention is to send out Just the Facts each Friday; yet, there are best intentions and then there is life in a busy Lower School.

Smooth, calm, peaceful and happy describe our start of school.  The faculty commented there is an increased, purposeful attention to others in our learning spaces, and this is the result of some intentional work by the faculty connecting learning, routines and behavior.  Starting last spring, continuing over the summer and into the fall, the faculty spent time reflecting on how to help children internalize expectations which best facilitate and enhance learning in a community.  We focused on three questions: How do I care for myself? How do I care for others?  How do I care for my community?  Four words informed our conversations: learning, awareness, respect and safety.  We wanted children to experience across the board common expectations and language, no matter the teacher or the classroom.

We have a school where children are delightfully immersed in the world of being a child, and in that world building friendships, playing, connecting and discovering are paramount.  Children are naturally inclined to be a little self-absorbed, and they have a right to be, at times.  The world of being a kid is engrossing.  Yet, it is the work of the adults who surround them to bring their attention to another level, and that is the level of:  What does it mean to live, play and work with others?  The faculty work each day to help children have both worlds: the world of being a child while building an awareness of others and how their behavior impacts those around them.

In advance, I want to thank you for the partnership in the coming year.  As always, please share your thoughts with me, and in all honesty and humility, I do not mind reminders if I have not gotten back to you.

Onward to the year ahead,
