Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

On the playground are eight, new, bright colored Adirondack chairs purchased by Parent Council.  Being outside is critically important to children, and yet, higher rates of childhood melanoma is a rising concern with pediatricians and dermatologists.  With our new chairs tucked into the shady places on the playground, children can now take a take a break from the sun if they wish.  While many schools have reduced recess, our faculty resists that reduction because they know recess nourishes growing minds and bodies.  Recess gives children space and time to develop the skills of negotiating, resolving conflicts and building friendships while they learn how to move their bodies through space with reasonable risk-taking.  Recess reduces stress as children take charge of making decisions. Immersion in the outdoor world fosters a devotion to the earth, unfolding the lifelong habits of environmental stewardship.  And the best overall benefit of recess is more engaged learners in the classroom.  For all those many reasons, thank you Parent Council for the chairs.  They are a wonderful addition to the playground.

And here's an equally important reminder for adults: get outside and stay outside.  You will reap many of the same benefits, most notably stress reduction and better health.

Have a great weekend, wherever you spend your time,

Kristin

From Teacher Lynn:

Thank you, families, for encouraging summer reading!  We received hundreds of postcards with well-written book summaries, and we appreciate all you do to encourage reading in your homes.  The cards are on display in the library, in classrooms, and are being read throughout the year in Gathering.  I am also reading them at the beginning of each library class, to give reading ideas to the students.  A peer review is much more exciting than a suggestion from an adult!  Let your children see you reading this fall, and take family reading breaks as a way to slow down together to enjoy a family read-aloud.  There are many suggestions and links to great books on the LS library home page, as well as links to popular authors, recommended books, and award-winning titles.
