Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

There are parts of the Lower School program which are highly visible: plays, homework, the development of friendships, library books, projects.  There is another part of Lower School which enriches our lives weekly and, yet, is a bit more hidden: Meeting for Worship.

Each week we leave everything behind in the Lower School building and carry our hearts and minds to the meeting house. Clearing the distractions and in expectant silence, we listen to the messages that arise.  The messages, whether from a child or from an adult, hold relevance to the issues of children's lives: fairness, nature, kindness, celebrations, affection for their school and caring for others.  Many times within a child's message is a connection between the content of what they are learning and their own beliefs.

If you asked someone, "Is it possible or a wise idea to have 190 children sit in quiet for 30 minutes?" the answer might be "Absolutely not."  Yet, the feeling is not one of a holding pen.  No matter how busy my morning has been, I sit in Meeting for Worship moved and awestruck.  In that room, we are individuals united into one community, and we leave uplifted in the joy of being part of something mysteriously larger than ourselves.  To me, a Divine spirit enfolds us in the meeting house.

Meeting for Worship is a hidden, deep asset of your child's education at Westtown, and I want you to experience it.  I invite each of you to attend one Meeting for Worship during the year.  Thursdays from 11:20 – 11:50.   There is a space saved for you on the back bench.
