Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

We are a little past New Year's resolutions, and I've already broken mine, at which point I decided it was more of a mindset than an absolute.  Similarly, the New Year's resolutions I set out for Lower School, in our first Gathering of 2018, are more of a mindset.  For New Year's resolutions, we are asking the children to keep in mind two ways of thinking about others:  being kind and being part of a team.

An embedded mission in Lower School is enabling children to be their best and truest selves.  Yet, to be your best, truest self is not enough.  Only caring about yourself is narrow and unproductive to the community.  Kindness is an action that requires putting someone else's needs before your own.  Kindness asks you to attend to others and not always pay attention to yourself.  Being part of a team has similar requirements:  think of others, watch for what others do and how you can help that effort.  Many times, in teamwork you accomplish more than you can alone.

I wanted to share these resolutions in case they hold meaning for your life as a family or at home.  Being kind and being part of a team.  Do not hesitate to ask your children to think of others.  We do them a great disservice to allow them to think they are the center of the world.  Our children feel immense love; asking them to think of others will not diminish that feeling.  It will only grow the love towards others.

The children in Lower School practice contributing to a community every day in ways which are exceptional and unique to Westtown.  These resolutions encourage them to be even a bit more intentional about taking care of their community.

P.S. Eagles fans – please consider the kids getting to bed at their regular bedtimes on Sunday night.  Staying up late on a Sunday night sets off the week on a tired foot.  Sleep deficits on a school night cannot be made up, and always remember, sleep is the underrated vitamin for kids.  (And I realize I harass you often about sleep, but it is a hugely critical piece to children's success in school and in their ability to be resilient.)
