Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

Today, the Board of Trustees are on campus for their meetings, and as part of their morning, they had the opportunity to visit Lower School.  The focus of the morning was science, math and computer science.

Here's a snapshot of what they saw:

  • First grade working in math centers: SCRATCH (the M.I.T. coding program) and differentiated card games to practice subtraction on many different levels;
  • Second grade starting to think about fractions;
  • Second grade planting peas and potatoes in our Lower School garden with Farmer Tim;
  • Fourth grade science experiments investigating vibrations we cannot see;
  • Fifth grade science fair projects where the topics ranged from: What materials block Wi-Fi signals? to What conditions do pill bugs prefer?;
  • Fifth grade computer science classes focusing on digital citizenship, specifically, What is private information and how do you protect it?; and,
  • Fifth grade math tackling algebra.

All in a day, spanning from hands in the dirt, to coding, to algebra.

Next year, we will be offering the same kinds of content mornings where you can come and see a range of experiences across the grade levels.  The content mornings will cover math, science, reading, writing and specials.  I'd love to know if you might be interested in these types of mornings.  Please feel free to send me an email if you might be interested or have other thoughts about what you would like to see.

Stay warm this weekend.  Yesterday, there were bluebirds in the front yard of Lower School so spring is here, just lurking, late to the seasonal party.
