Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

As you hurry in and out of the school to scoop up your children or meet with a teacher, I invite you to stop and read the large, lobby bulletin board.  The board documents the fourth grade's chicken coop design project.   Through scientific observations, mathematical data, programming of remote cameras and creativity, the students envisioned different solutions for the current chicken coop.

The study reflects a beautiful mix of science and childhood.

The critical thinking in the proposed, scientific solutions is sophisticated and includes a range of concepts:

●       Sustainability

●       Habitat design

●       Protection from predators

●       Health and wellness (the need for water and food)

●       Importance of stimulating thinking (empathy for the chicken's intellectual life)

The content of the project reflects the underlying concerns of childhood:

●       Will I feel safe?

●       Will I be loved?

●       I want to play.

●       I don't want to be bored.

●       I want food when I am hungry.

●       I need exercise.

Empathy, scientific collection of data, engineering – it's all there in the answers to the question:  What do chickens need?  As the world evolves farming practices to produce enough healthy food to feed the planet, our Westtown students will be ready.

Kristin

Host Family Program

The Host Family Program needs you! Join other Westtown families who host boarding student from afar. Thirty new international students and many American students from a distance will arrive next year, all of whom need host families. Host families offer some home-cooked meals, enjoy culture-crossing conversations, and often develop relationships that live on after a student's first year at Westtown. Host families are NOT responsible for boarding over breaks or transporting students. Contact Pat.Macpherson@westtown.edu to learn more.

Adult Mindfulness Series - Come learn about and practice mindfulness during the month of May! Mindfulness teacher Vicky Huestis will lead this four-week series on Tuesday mornings at 9 am in the Lower School. This is open to all so please feel free to spread the word to friends and family.
