Meet the Advancement Team

We encourage you to reach out to us and learn about how you can support Westtown or how Westtown can support you. Advancing Westtown's mission can only be done in partnership with our dedicated community!

Ted Lutkus - Interim Director of Advancement
610.399.7940 - ted.lutklus@westtown.edu

I came to Westtown in 1990 as an Associate Dean, science teacher, coach, and Boys Third Dorm Head.  While I have always taught science about every five years I have a new role: Dean of Students, Science Department Head, and Upper School Principal.  Recently I joined the Advancement Office with a focus on funds for the Science Center. Fun Fact:  I use to have an old boat and sailed all over the Chesapeake and sometimes a little farther.  Since I sold the boat, I have had the itch to get back to the water. So, I am building a small wooden sailing dinghy in my backyard from plans from the internet, and I have never really done woodworking.

Kris Batley '81 - Director of Alumni Engagement & Stewardship
610.399.7913 - kris.batley@westtown.edu

I was a nomad for the first 28 years of my life: boarding school in Pennsylvania (I'll give you one guess where that was), college in Massachusetts, junior year in Paris, law school in Cleveland and summers in Michigan and Minnesota. I am now happily settled a mile from Westtown, but my wanderlust continues!  I love to travel and always have my next vacation plan in the wings. Fun Fact: 10 years after graduating from Westtown I married my classmate Bob Batley '81, and he has been my soulmate for the past 22 years.

Becky Bernstein - Advancement Services Manager

Even though most of my day is spent in front of a computer, I love traveling with my husband of 34 years and my twin 21 year old daughters. We have so much fun on vacation that they are still tagging along!  If I am not traveling, I am reading about faraway places and I am obsessed with Civil War history. Our four cats make life interesting when the girls are not at home. Fun Fact:  I entered college at the University of Illinois as an Anthropology Major, graduated with a degree in Leisure Studies (Recreation), worked 25 years in the YMCA as a program director, worked part time as an aerobics instructor and I am still trying to figure out how I ended up being a Database Manager. Life takes you funny places!!

Jenny Bopp - Advancement Services Assistant
610.399.7923 - jenny.bopp@westtown.edu

I'm a Midwestern girl through and through, with an unabashed pride in my MN Twins and Vikings. I love dancing, canoeing, camping adventures, my mom's Tater Tot Hotdish, and spending time with my favorite person in the world (my hubby). Fun Fact: I am notoriously addicted to DSW. I have approximately 24 pairs of shoes that I rotate through each year, including 5 pairs of boots, and 12 pairs of heels. I might have a problem, but I'm not willing to face it just yet...

Steven Brotschul - Director of Leadership Giving
610.399.7911 - stephen.brotschul@westtown.edu

After four years of serving as the Head of School for West Nottingham Academy in Maryland, I have returned to Pennsylvania to serve as the Director of Leadership Giving for Westtown. Working in the Advancement Office, I will have the opportunity to work with and meet supporters of our school, and assist with grant writing. Fun Fact: for the first few years of my life, I lived in West Chester when my father was an administrator at Stetson Middle School.

Claudia Callahan '87 - Advancement Administrative Assistant and Alumni Coordinator
610.399.7941 - claudia.callahan@westtown.edu

Sitting on the porch with my girls and our two labs on a Saturday morning after a long run is my ideal start to any day.  My identical twin girls enjoy playing and watching sports as much as I and our goal is to run across the finish line of a half-marathon (13.1 mile) for their 13th birthday, hand in hand.  I ran my first marathon with my great friend, Olympic athlete and fellow Westonian Andrea Wieland '87 and I ran my second marathon in Boston in honor of my mother (and past Westtown faculty) Marianne Schindler. Iit was an experience of a lifetime. I love the beach and the ocean and have a fairly new-found love and fascination of ocean mammals. Fun Fact: I traded in my suit for jeans after many years in the corporate world when I was recruited to work at a local Harley-Davidson dealership. I ended up working there for over 10 years.

Ray Slater - Director of Planned Giving
610.399.7917 - ray.slater@westtown.edu

Like most folks in fundraising, I got here by accident. In my case, my love of baseball led me to a new career path. Having recently decided to stay put in Philadelphia rather than relocate to New York after the publisher I worked for was acquired, I went to Vets Stadium with a bunch of friends and sat next to a friend of a friend. She happened to work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and mentioned that the museum was looking for someone to write fundraising letters. I made a call, got an interview, wrote an “audition” piece, and voila – I was a fundraiser! Thirty years later, I still love baseball, and I still love to help people figure out ways to support the causes they hold dear. Fun Fact: My mother’s father was a bartender – before, during and after Prohibition.

Courtnay Tyus - Director of Annual Giving
610.399.7922 - courtnay.tyus@westtown.edu

I am the daughter of a retired kindergarten teacher Mom and sales professional Dad and I grew up in Wayne, PA.  I love that my career path has brought me to Westtown and my role here is, interestingly, a great combination of my parents’ careers, but not at all what I studied in school. I am a Villanova alum so, naturally, basketball is my sport of choice – as a spectator only! Fun Fact: I am fascinated by the theory of six degrees of separation and I love networking, so I am often discovering how I am connected to other people. Turns out, I have been connected to Westtown for many years and had no idea!

Karl Vela '03 - Advancement Communications Specialist

I regard my Westtown education as the most formative experience of my life. It has shaped who I am as a person and I am thrilled to be back home devoting my professional energy towards making Westtown an even better place. My interests are many but camping and backpacking are paramount. Odds are, if I'm not at home or at Westtown I'm deep in the wilderness on an adventure. My other hobbies include cooking, archery, mountain biking, and many other things I wish I had more time for. Fun Fact: I developed my passion for telling stories through video as a student at Westtown.
