Merit Scholarships

In addition to need-based financial aid, Westtown School is pleased to offer merit scholarships. These scholarships recognize exceptional students who demonstrate excellence in academics, leadership, the arts, athletics and global engagement. They are available to applicants for 6th -12th grade. Students may apply for any one of the categories. Merit Scholarship applications are due January 15.

Selection criteria are:

Academic: For students with exceptional academic achievement as demonstrated by grades, SSAT test scores and teacher recommendations. They exhibit a depth and breadth of knowledge, achieve superior grades with consistency, express a desire to conduct original research and exhibit a passion for learning.

Athletic: For students with a record of athletic success in one sport or more who act as leaders for their teammates, who play with integrity, grace, good humor, and a drive to win.

Global Engagement: For students who have accomplished two or more of the following: leadership in global learning projects, study or work with global organizations, proficiency in multiple languages, all evidenced by strong recommendations from organization leaders, teachers or collaborators. Students exhibit a strong commitment to issues of global relevance and passionate curiosity about the world.

Leadership: For students with a history of substantive leadership demonstrated by strong recommendations from organization leader(s). Preference is given to those who show leadership in areas of service, sustainability and social justice. They are actively engaged in roles that influence and enrich their communities, exhibiting conviction, integrity and initiative.

Performing/Fine Arts: For students who excel in performing, vocal, instrumental and fine arts as demonstrated by portfolios and strong recommendations from instructor(s). They exhibit self-discipline, motivation and diligence in perfecting their craft, as well as the ability to take creative risks. They demonstrate curiosity and commitment to their art beyond the classroom.

Students who are applying to the 6th through 12th grades at Westtown School may also apply for a merit scholarship by completing the Merit Scholarship application form. They must also submit an additional recommendation to support the application. While applying for Financial Aid is not a requirement, parents are strongly encouraged to do so. To learn more about this process and to apply, visit our Financial Aid page. Merit applications are due January 15.

Current Westtown students who are interested in applying for merit aid (for the first time) may apply as rising 6th grade or rising 9th grade students only. All other application deadlines and guidelines are the same.

There are a limited number of new awards each year. Grants for Middle School students are $2,500 and grants for Upper School students range from $2,500 to $15,000 with the average Upper School grant being $5,000. Typically, five to ten new awards are given annually, which is about 5% of newly enrolled students.

Annual award renewal will be contingent upon good academic and community standing. Students do not need to re-apply annually.
