Listen To Me: 21st Century Plays for 21st Century Teens
For the 2018-19 season, Westtown Theater presents a series of contemporary plays that give voice to the inner thoughts, ambitions, hopes, and fears of today’s teens. All performances are in the Barton-Test Theater

Fall Play

Devised by Westtown Students based on an original play developed by Emily Lim and Ned Glasier.

"My Brain isn't broken... it’s beautiful."

Using cutting-edge research, playwrights Emily Lim and Ned Glasier have crafted a blueprint for creating a new play about teenagers and their brains which the student ensemble use to devise a new production-based on their own personal stories. Every time Brainstorm is produced, it is an entirely different play derived from the same starting point. All theater experiences are unique, but this takes that idea to a new level.

Winter Musical

As You Like it - A New Musical

A Musical Adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play by Shaina Taub and Laurie Woolery

"What is it I heard them singing?... Together we'll heal our wounds."

Rosalind has been abandoned by her father and forced to live a life she does not want. Orlando feels lost, purposeless, and forgotten. As they try to forge their own identities against societal pressures, they discover the transformative power of love and community. Created for the Public Theater's Public Works project in 2017, this production cracks open Shakespeare's classic comedy to find new meeting for today's audiences with a score by one of musical theater's most exciting young writers. This will be one of the first productions after the debut.

Spring Play

An Evening of One Act Plays

Three short plays, including two world premieres and “21 Chump Street” by Lin-Manuel Miranda

"Seriously, these kids need to learn there are consequences in life..."

In the Spring we will present three one act plays about life in high school today. The first, 21 Chump Street, is a (very) short musical written by Lin Manuel Miranda (Hamiliton). Based on a This American Life segment, 21 Chump Street tells the true story of what happens when Justin falls for Naomi, an undercover narcotics officer, and makes one terrible life-altering decision. For the other two plays, we have commissioned two exciting playwrights who will develop new works just for Westtown. More information to follow.
