College Essay Writing 


Dates: August 9-20
Course Description: This online course provides instruction and practice in writing personal essays for submission with college applications. Over the course of this two-week session, students will explore the purpose of the college essay and strategies for writing them effectively. The class will review personal essay models, admissions office feedback, suggestions and strategies, sample "successful" college essays for reference, and practice writing to answer a variety of sample prompts. The goal of the two-week session is to have each student take at least one essay, from the prompt(s) of their choice, through several drafts, revising, and editing to a final essay ready for submission.

Class meeting time:
Monday- Friday 8:30 a.m. - 1 2:30 p.m. EDT

  • Synchronous:
    9:30 a.m. -10:30 a.m.
  • Asynchronous:
    10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Students will also schedule at least one, 30 minute, one-on-one meeting each week to discuss an essay/essays in progress with the instructor. These meetings will be synchronous on Zoom.

Young Adult Fiction and Academic Enrichment


Dates: August 9-20  
Course Description: The goal of the course is to introduce and refine everyday study habits for rising 9th graders or new students to the Upper School who need some additional academic support. Students will practice organization, time management, note taking, writing, speaking, collaborating, digital literacy, and self advocacy through young adult fiction such as a graphic novel, among other materials.
