Academic excellence is a given at great schools like Westtown. You'll find challenges, rigor and high standards in every grade.
Here at Westtown, though, we’re after a much more ambitious goal: to be a school that shapes thinkers and doers who matter in the world. It’s a goal we’ve been pursuing and reaching for more than 200 years.
We do this work by first respecting each student's individual gifts. We believe that "there is that of God in each of us," which means we prize each member of our community. One of our most beloved teachers puts it this way: “The truth can come from any corner of the room. Students soon realize their voices are valued. But at the same time they realize that not every truth can be considered equal and thus they become critical thinkers.” At Westtown, students learn who they are and what they can contribute.
Students like that tend do well in school and go off to wonderful colleges and universities. While we’re exceptionally good at preparing students for college, our aims are higher. Much higher.
“The truth can come from any corner of the room. Students soon realize their voices are valued. But at the same time they realize that not every truth can be considered equal and thus they become critical thinkers.”
When Westtown graduates head out into the world after college, they enter a terrain that demands their leadership, challenges their integrity and requires their adaptability.
Four years of college aren’t enough to prepare them to thrive in a world like that.
That’s why academic rigor is only part of the Westtown way. Westtown is equally committed to providing the experiences, challenges and support to hone each student’s ability to lead ethical lives in a complex world.
