The Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice Certificate recognizes significant growth, reflection, and action on the intersection of the themes of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice in the experiences of underrepresented populations within American society.

Required Course Work:

Student must select two of the following:

English, History, Religion elective focused on diversity topic
Environmental Justice
Independent Research (Advanced) with a diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice focus
May petition to replace one of the above courses

Required Project Work:

Two projects or major assignments in OTHER classes which represent deep reflection of at least one diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice theme

Two of the following:

One extended project exploring in greater depth a topic introduced in one of the required classes
One critical reflection on one recommended books that present an autobiographical, biographical, or personal perspective from an underrepresented population
One critical reflection on one academic book that addresses diversity, equity, inclusion, or social justice:

Immersion Dimension:

Create and implement or join an off-campus experience with a diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice focus; OR
Student-designed work with a diversity, equity, inclusion, & social justice focus (minimum 10 days); OR
Active participation in a conference focused on Diversity training or leadership

Extracurricular Opportunity:

Active membership for at least two full years in two of the following organizations, one of which must be outside of one’s own affinity group:

Black Student Union (BSU)
International Students Organization (ISO)
Rainbow Alliance
Students of Color Association (SoCA)
Anti-Racist White Student Affinity Group
Jewish Student Union (JSU)
And other Affinity groups or student groups based in identity

Capstone Project:

Students engage in a project-based learning demonstration synthesis which ties together provides both a “mirror” and “window” experience into a cogent, reflective product:

Portfolio collecting all documents
Workshop to teach others
Artifact created by student
Critical analysis in connection with Global Competences
