Math

Throughout Middle School, various levels of math are offered and students are placed based on their understanding of the material, their confidence with math generally, and their ability to understand abstract concepts inherent in the subject matter. Math teachers use a variety of tools and projects in which students apply mathematical concepts and build skills through solving real-world problems. Teachers strive to make math feel relevant for students by having them apply concepts to projects to which they can relate. Assignments challenge students to use math in multiple ways and to see it through multiple lenses.

In 6th grade, three levels of math are offered. Using an integrated math approach, students master mathematical topics including:

  • problem solving
  • data analysis
  • sets and numbers
  • graphing,
  • geometry
  • probability
  • fractions
  • Exponents
  • other pre-Algebra topics.

Four levels of math are offered in 7th grade:

  • 7th Small Group Math: A grade-level math course that offers a smaller class size so students are able to get more time for teacher support.
  • 7th Grade Math: On-level and above-level math class. This class combines the common core standards within the 6th and 7th grade year in order for students to take an Algebra I class in 8th grade.
  • 7th Grade Math Advanced: Above-level math class. This class combines the common core standards within the 6th and 7th grade year in order for students to take an Algebra I class in 8th grade. This class builds a strong foundation in algebraic skills in order to prepare students for an advanced geometry course in 9th grade.
  • 7th Grade Math Accelerated: This is an accelerated class for students who are passionate about math and seeking an additional challenge. It requires more homework time than the other sections. These students will work to be ready for Precalculus in 10th grade.

Four levels of math are also offered in 8th grade:

  • 8th Grade Small Group Math: A grade-level math course that offers a smaller class size, so students are able to get more time for teacher support.
  • 8th Grade Algebra 1: On-level and above-level math class. This course builds a strong foundation in algebraic skills in order to prepare students for a geometry course in 9th grade.
  • 8th Grade Algebra 1 Advanced: Above-level math class. This class builds a strong foundation in algebraic skills in order to prepare students for an advanced geometry course in 9th grade.
  • 8th Grade Algebra 1 Accelerated: This is an accelerated class for students who are passionate about math and seeking additional challenges. It requires more homework time than the other sections. These students will work to be ready for Precalculus in 10th grade.
