Middle School

We create a safe environment for students to gain new understandings of themselves and the world they live in as we give them opportunities for learning, growth, leadership, and independence while inspiring and preparing them to be leaders and stewards of a better world.

Critical Thinkers. Compassionate Leaders.

Westtown’s Middle School curriculum engages students in purposeful, hands-on learning that builds essential skills across disciplines. From experimenting in science labs and exploring identity in literature, to solving real-world problems in math and studying language and culture, students develop as critical thinkers and effective communicators. Rooted in inquiry and creativity, the program prepares students for Upper School and beyond with a strong academic foundation and a sense of global awareness.

Building Connection, Confidence, and Community

Student life in Middle School is centered on connection, belonging, and growth. Through homeroom, advisory, Middle Moose Spirit Teams, and community programming, students form meaningful relationships and explore who they are. Service learning and equity-focused initiatives empower them to engage with purpose, while a strong support system helps them thrive both personally and academically.

Arts

Express. Explore. Imagine.

At Westtown, the arts are woven into the fabric of the Middle School experience. With opportunities in visual art, ceramics, music, theater, film, and design, students engage their imaginations and hone creative skills in a variety of mediums. Our curriculum emphasizes process over perfection, encouraging collaboration, experimentation, and expression. Whether composing music, designing sets, shaping clay, or performing on stage, students develop artistic confidence and learn to think in new, interdisciplinary ways—all while having fun and producing work they’re proud of.

Athletics

Teamwork, Growth, and the Joy of Play

Athletics are central to the Middle School experience at Westtown, where every student in grades 6–8 plays on an interscholastic team during all three seasons. With a focus on teamwork, growth, and sportsmanship, our inclusive program ensures that every player has a role and plays in every game. Our 25 teams compete in over 280 events each year, facing peer schools in the Friends’ School League, Delaware Independent School Conference, and InterAC. Guided by coaches who are also teachers, student-athletes benefit from strong mentorship on and off the field as they develop lifelong habits of health, resilience, and collaboration.

Supporting the Whole Child, Every Step of the Way

Middle School students are supported by a dedicated team that prioritizes their academic, emotional, and physical well-being. Through wellness classes, individual advising, and access to counseling and health services, students gain the tools they need to thrive—both in school and in life.

Quaker Practice at the Heart of School Life

Quaker practice is at the heart of Middle School life at Westtown. Weekly Meetings for Worship offer students space for reflection, connection, and shared silence. Student-led gatherings and Meetings for Business foster leadership, community-mindedness, and a deep sense of purpose.

Meet Our Middle School Principal

Middle School Principal Will Addis has held many roles at Westtown, among them Chair of the Arts Department and was Clerk of the Upper School Faculty. Dedicated to the central tenets of Quaker education, Will is active with Friends Council on Education, as co-clerk of FCE’s Performing Arts Program Steering Committee and a participant in the 2019-2021 cohort of the Institute for Engaging Leaders in Friends Schools. Before coming to Westtown, Will taught at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and Bronx Community College of CUNY. At Worcester Academy, Will was Director of Theater Arts, taught and directed, served as a dorm head, academic advisor, and advisor to the Gay-Straight Alliance; and at Bakerloo Theater Project, he was Producing Artistic Director. Since 2015, Will has also directed theater productions and taught a variety of theater classes to middle and high school-aged students at McCarter Theater Center. Will received a B.A. from Drew University and went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts in Directing from The City University of New York, Brooklyn College, and a Certificate of School Management and Leadership from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Business School. Will’s track record in visionary change management is outstanding, and he brings a collegial, supportive style in implementing bold strategic initiatives to this new role at Westtown.
