The Middle School years are a time of enormous change. It can be daunting, but it is also exciting as our students transition from childhood to young adulthood, gaining independence and confidence along the way. This is a time of self-reflection, joy, hard work, and play. Westtown’s encouraging and collaborative atmosphere sparks new strengths and nurtures talents in Middle School students. Our teachers are experts in their fields who not only provide students with engaging, interactive classroom experiences, but also develop relationships that extend beyond the classroom as mentors, advisors, and coaches.
We create a safe environment for students to gain new understandings of themselves and the world they live in as we give them opportunities for learning, growth, leadership, and independence while inspiring and preparing them to be leaders and stewards of a better world.
Westtown’s Middle School curriculum engages students in purposeful, hands-on learning that builds essential skills across disciplines. From experimenting in science labs and exploring identity in literature, to solving real-world problems in math and studying language and culture, students develop as critical thinkers and effective communicators. Rooted in inquiry and creativity, the program prepares students for Upper School and beyond with a strong academic foundation and a sense of global awareness.

Student life in Middle School is centered on connection, belonging, and growth. Through homeroom, advisory, Middle Moose Spirit Teams, and community programming, students form meaningful relationships and explore who they are. Service learning and equity-focused initiatives empower them to engage with purpose, while a strong support system helps them thrive both personally and academically.
EXPLORE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT LIFE →At Westtown, the arts are woven into the fabric of the Middle School experience. With opportunities in visual art, ceramics, music, theater, film, and design, students engage their imaginations and hone creative skills in a variety of mediums. Our curriculum emphasizes process over perfection, encouraging collaboration, experimentation, and expression. Whether composing music, designing sets, shaping clay, or performing on stage, students develop artistic confidence and learn to think in new, interdisciplinary ways—all while having fun and producing work they’re proud of.
EXPLORE MIDDLE SCHOOL ARTSAthletics are central to the Middle School experience at Westtown, where every student in grades 6–8 plays on an interscholastic team during all three seasons. With a focus on teamwork, growth, and sportsmanship, our inclusive program ensures that every player has a role and plays in every game. Our 25 teams compete in over 280 events each year, facing peer schools in the Friends’ School League, Delaware Independent School Conference, and InterAC. Guided by coaches who are also teachers, student-athletes benefit from strong mentorship on and off the field as they develop lifelong habits of health, resilience, and collaboration.
EXPLORE MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETICSMiddle School students are supported by a dedicated team that prioritizes their academic, emotional, and physical well-being. Through wellness classes, individual advising, and access to counseling and health services, students gain the tools they need to thrive—both in school and in life.
Quaker practice is at the heart of Middle School life at Westtown. Weekly Meetings for Worship offer students space for reflection, connection, and shared silence. Student-led gatherings and Meetings for Business foster leadership, community-mindedness, and a deep sense of purpose.
